About This Image

Location: Northern California Coast

We came for the sunset.

After days on the road, my wife and I had finally set up camp on a remote stretch of California coast. I had a vision in my mind—warm skies, soft light, waves glowing under golden hour. But nature had other plans.

The sky was locked in shades of gray. The air was thick with moisture. The sun, completely swallowed.

This wasn’t the scene I’d imagined.

And truth be told, I almost packed it in. I sat with my camera in my lap, quietly watching the waves roll in under stormy clouds. No light show. No color pop. Just blue. Everywhere.

But then something shifted—not in the weather, but in me.

Instead of waiting for the sky to change, I decided to change the way I saw it.

I slowed my shutter speed, stood up, and began to move—panning the camera across the shoreline, letting instinct and rhythm take over. I wasn’t capturing the scene anymore—I was interpreting it. Translating mood into motion. Letting go of the rules I usually cling to.

And just like that, the image emerged.

No horizon line. No sharp detail. Just movement. Just feeling.
A storm remembered not by how it looked, but by how it felt.

I call it Blue Drift. A reminder that sometimes, the best photographs aren’t found in perfect light—but in the willingness to try something new when the plan falls apart.

This piece is for anyone who’s sat in the quiet, expecting something else—and walked away with something unexpected.
